DJ Sly King Talks Growth, Ghanaian Music, And International Tours

In an engaging interview on 3Music TV's, the renowned Ghanaian DJ, DJ Sly King, shared insights about his career, the growth of the DJ industry in Ghana, and his role in promoting Ghanaian music internationally. The conversation touched on various aspects of his journey, including the origin of his nickname, "The Unstoppable," and his experiences as a DJ.

When asked where the nickname "The Unstoppable" originated, DJ Sly King explained, "Growing up, I've always had a dream. I believe in myself and where I want to get to. With my determination and hard work, no matter what people say, I am a go-getter. So, I am 'The Unstoppable.'" His unwavering belief in self-improvement and his relentless pursuit of success have defined his career in the competitive DJ industry.

Reflecting on the DJ scene in Ghana, DJ Sly King noted significant improvements since he first entered the industry. He explained that, historically, DJs were not as respected or valued as they are today. "There’s a lot of improvement," he said, comparing the past to the present. "The value of DJs has increased, and things are getting better, especially with how much they offer DJs for gigs." Despite these advancements, DJ Sly King emphasized that his desire for constant self-improvement has kept him motivated throughout his career.

The conversation also touched on DJ Sly King's recent international tour, which included stops in Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. This was not his first time performing in the U.S., but each tour, he said, gets "better and better." While reflecting on the experience, he expressed his pride in representing Ghana on international stages and noted the evolving appreciation for Ghanaian music abroad.

"Comparing some years back, there were times when people weren’t ready for new Ghanaian records," he said. However, things have changed, with more people embracing both older Ghanaian hits, like hiplife and highlife, and contemporary Afrobeat sounds. "People really still vibe with those songs... some of the old Ghana songs never die."

DJ Sly King also discussed the critical role DJs play in breaking new music and pushing Ghanaian music to international audiences. He acknowledged the challenges that DJs face, particularly in spaces dominated by Nigerian music, but stressed that DJs in Ghana and the diaspora have been supportive of local artistes. "DJs play a vital role in pushing music to the next level," he said. However, the reality of catering to diverse crowds, especially at events where Nigerians are often the majority, makes it difficult to prioritize Ghanaian music.

He urged Ghanaians to show up more at international events, as a stronger presence could increase the demand for Ghanaian music.

One of DJ Sly King’s most memorable moments during his tour happened at a venue called The Red Room. He shared a special moment when someone in the crowd put a Ghana flag around his neck when he was busily playing, symbolizing how his presence and music made people feel at home.

Among the highlights of the interview was DJ Sly King’s nomination for the upcoming 3Music Awards in the DJ of the Year category. Although he wasn’t expecting the nomination while on tour, he expressed his gratitude for the recognition. "I’ve been doing a lot, so it’s nice to be recognized." When asked how he would feel about winning, he said, "If I win, it’s good. If I don’t win, it’s also good. It wouldn’t stop me from continuing to work hard."

DJ Sly King has not only been a force in the DJ world but has also ventured into music production, collaborating with several artistes over the years. "I wanted to be that superstar DJ," he said, explaining his decision to start making music to elevate his brand. Over the years, he has worked with artistes such as Black Prophet, Ckay, Ice Prince, Wendy Shay, Fameye, and others.

As the interview drew to a close, DJ Sly King reflected on the future of DJing in Ghana. He expressed optimism about the direction the industry is heading, with DJs now receiving more recognition in major awards schemes like the 3Music Awards.

For DJ Sly King, the future of DJing in Ghana is bright, and he’s ready to keep pushing boundaries, both at home and abroad, as The Unstoppable.
