The Exploratory Partners HPW Ghana To Expand Practical Stem Education In Rural Ghana

The Exploratory has formed a strategic partnership with HPW Fresh and Dry Limited, one of

Ghana’s leading fruit processing companies to expand practical STEM education in rural

communities in Ghana.

Through this partnership, HPW Ghana will provide sponsorship to support The Exploratory in

launching its STEM program in 10 public basic schools within the Upper West Akim and Awutu

Senya West Districts. This initiative will include training workshops for science teachers from

selected schools, provision of STEM resources, and the formation of STEM clubs in each of the

10 partner schools. The program will conclude with a science fair and exhibition, where students

will have the opportunity to create and exhibit projects that address challenges in their

communities.

Since their founding in 2011, HPW Ghana has established a production facility in Adeiso, 70

kilometers outside Accra, right in the heart of Ghana’s fruit-growing region. They have

continuously expanded their production capacities, and today, is Africa's largest producer of

dried mango, pineapple, and coconut, as well as an innovator in fruit snacks. Operating year-

round, HPW Ghana processes over 25,000 tonnes of fresh fruit annually, exports 2,500 tonnes

of dried fruit, and employs 1,500 people.

At the launch of the program, HPW Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to promoting practical

STEM education through partnerships with STEM-focused organizations like The Exploratory.

The Programs Manager for The Exploratory, Mr. Christian Sackey-Acquah, praised the

collaboration as a vital step in supporting schools in rural communities that lack the needed

resources to make the teaching and learning of STEM practical and exciting. “I strongly believe

that no teacher or student should be left behind in the current wave of enthusiasm surrounding

STEM education. Unfortunately, many schools in rural communities have limited or no access to

STEM tools and it is only through partnerships like this that The Exploratory can expand its

programs to these underserved areas”, he stated.

The launch event was attended by the HPW Ghana team, led by Mr. Michael Fumey, along with

representatives from the Upper West Akim District Education Directorate and the Awutu Senya

West District Education Directorate.

courageous and community-minded, by making Science, Technology, Engineering and

Mathematics (STEM) relevant, joyful, collaborative and equitable. We empower communities

and students by transforming rote learning and teaching within and beyond the classroom. We

increase student and teacher understanding and interest in STEM through training, physical

learning materials and digital resources, and weekly STEM clubs. Through field trips and role

model visits, we expand teachers’ horizons and student aspirations for future studies and

careers, especially as they relate to STEM. Since our inception in 2016, we have trained over

500 teachers and 10,000 students in public basic schools in deprived communities on practical

science, gender equity and active learning techniques.
