Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the head of Equatorial Guinea's National Agency for Financial Investigation (ANIF), has become embroiled in a national crisis after explicit personal recordings leaked online.
The tapes, which are said to number over 300, show Ebang having relations with several women, some of whom are married, including the wife of the Presidential security chief and his own brother's marriage. The films, allegedly filmed in a variety of locales, including his workplace, hotels, and public spaces, were discovered during a corruption investigation. Ebang was first imprisoned on corruption charges, but the inquiry revealed the recordings on his own devices. Authorities then leaked the tape, prompting considerable outrage.
The affair is especially combustible given Ebang's public image and personal life; he is married with six children. The discoveries have focused attention on the personal and professional conduct of officials in Equatorial Guinea's political scene. As more information becomes available, the incident has sparked considerable public interest and criticism.
