9th Parliament – Bagbin Retained As Speaker; Bernard Ahiafor And Andrew Asiamah Amoako Elected 1st And 2nd Deputies

Members of Parliament re-elected Hon. Alban Bagbin as Speaker, making him one of the longest-serving parliamentary figures in Ghana’s 4th Republic.

The session concluded with Speaker Bagbin suspending proceedings ahead of tomorrow’s much-anticipated presidential inauguration. Parliament will reconvene at 10:00 AM for this pivotal national event.

The house also successfully elected Hon. Bernard Ahiafor and Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako as First and Second Deputy Speakers, respectively.

• Andrew Asiamah Amoako elected as Second Deputy Speaker

The house has completed the election of the Second Deputy Speaker for Ghana’s 9th Parliament.

Hon. Frank Annor-Dompreh, the Majority Chief Whip, nominated Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, MP for Fomena, for the position. The nomination was seconded by Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, former Minority Leader.

With no additional nominations presented, Speaker Alban Bagbin declared Hon. Amoako duly elected as the Second Deputy Speaker.

Amoako, an NPP MP, previously served in the same capacity during the 8th Parliament, making this his second consecutive term as Second Deputy Speaker.

The election of both deputy speakers completes the formation of the leadership structure of the 9th Parliament, allowing the house to fully commence its legislative work.

Following the swearing-in of Speaker Alban Bagbin, the house has commenced the election of two deputy speakers for Ghana’s 9th Parliament.

Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, Chief Whip of the Minority, nominated Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, MP for Akatsi South, for the position of First Deputy Speaker. The nomination was seconded by Hon. Patricia Appiagyei of the NPP.

With no additional nominations presented, Speaker Bagbin declared Hon. Ahiafor duly elected as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament. His election marks a key step in the formation of leadership to steer the legislative business of the house.

The house now prepares to move on to the election of the Second Deputy Speaker.
