UG Introduces Self-Placement System For Unadmitted Qualified Applicants

The University of Ghana has introduced a self-placement system to allow qualified applicants who do not gain admission to select from available programs through the admissions portal.

This development was announced by the director of the Academic Affairs Directorate, Lydia Anowa Nyako-Danquah, during an interview on Campus Exclusive on Radio Univers on Thursday, January 9, 2024.

According to Mrs. Nyako-Danquah, the system is intended to assist applicants who may have chosen programs for which they do not meet the qualification requirements.

She advised such applicants to revisit the admissions portal and choose programs they are eligible for, stressing the demanding nature of university education and the importance of mental preparedness for certain courses.

“We have implemented a system to assist students who may not be admitted to self-place in suitable programs. If you do not receive any notification from us, revisit the portal where you will find options for programs you qualify for and self-place in it.”

“Sometimes applicants select programs they are not qualified for. Meeting the requirements is essential because university education is challenging, and it requires mental readiness to successfully pursue some courses.”

Mrs. Nyako-Danquah also announced the creation of an admissions helpdesk at the UG Information Center near the main entrance to assist students with their questions. She noted that the admissions process is expected to conclude by the end of January, paving the way for the matriculation of new students.

“A helpdesk will be available at the information center close to the main entrance for students who need assistance. The admissions process is expected to conclude by the end of January to pave the way for the matriculation of newly admitted students.

Admission to the University of Ghana requires at least credit passes (A1-C6) in six WASSCE subjects: three core subjects (English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies) and three electives relevant to the chosen program. An aggregate score of 24 or better is also required, with stricter requirements for competitive programs.
