Manchester City have completed their sixth signing of a busy January window with the addition of Nico González from Porto. City had an opening offer of €40 million rejected by the Portuguese giants but they’ve reached an agreement in a deal worth €60m. That fee matches the release clause in Gonzalez’s contract but City will pay in instalments, as opposed to the full fee up front.
Man City’s midfield issues in the absence of Rodri were badly exposed in the heavy 5-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday in the Premier League. Gonzalez has played 68 times for Porto contributing 18 goal contributions since joining from Barcelona for €8.44m in 2023. One complication in the negotiations with Porto for City was that the Catalan giants are owed 40% from González’s sale.
The arrival of González takes Manchester City’s spending in January to €218m - which is the second highest total across history in the January window. The 23-year-old’s arrival is City’s second most expensive of this window behind the €75m arrival of Omar Marmoush from Frankfurt. Speaking on joining City, González said: "This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career. I am 23 and I want to test myself in England. There’s no better club than Manchester City for me to do that. Look at the squad they have here. It’s unbelievable, full of world-class players. There isn’t a footballer in the world who would not want to be part of this set-up."
