Ablakwa Slams Akufo-Addo Over Delay In Payment Of NSS Allowances

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has requested that the government release funds to pay National Service allowance arrears for the months of March and April.

Given the current harsh economic conditions, the North Tongu Member of Parliament calls the delay in payment of the allowance “most unfair and insensitive” to graduate trainees.

In response to the concerns of distressed National Service Personnel, Mr. Ablakwa argued that, while the GH559 allowance is inadequate, an early disbursement would go a long way toward mitigating economic challenges and skyrocketing prices of goods and services.

“I would have thought that, in light of the current harsh economic conditions, the government would be increasing the current meager allowances rather than delaying payment once more.”

“How does government expect these vulnerable personnel, most of whom have been posted far away from home, to survive under the current cost of living crisis?” he queried in a Facebook post.

According to him, these personnel “signed for National Service, not National Suffering”; hence, government must strive to swiftly clear all arrears “immediately.”

“As I appealed the last time, I had to donate my salaries to personnel in my beloved constituency, government should first pay personnel at the end of the month before paying public sector workers as has always been the tradition for decades,” he advocated.

Hundreds of National Service personnel took to social media in March to express their dissatisfaction with the unpaid allowances, claiming that the situation has made life difficult for them.

The National Service Scheme then apologized for the delay and stated that it was not intentional. It promised to work around the clock to pay off all outstanding arrears.

The monthly allowances for March and April 2022 have yet to be released after paying for the month of January 2022.

Mason Greenwood Has Bail Extended As Rape Investigation Continues

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood will remain on bail over allegations he raped and assaulted a young woman following a court hearing.

The 20-year-old was arrested in January after images and videos were posted online, and he was also questioned on suspicion of making threats to kill.

His bail was due to expire in April but Greater Manchester Police made an application to the courts to extend it, with a hearing held on Thursday.

On Friday, a force spokesman said: “Following a hearing yesterday, a 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of rape, assault and making threats to kill on Sunday, January 30 remains on bail.”

The spokesman said no further updates would be issued until the suspect was charged or released facing no further action.

Within hours of the allegations surfacing online, the striker – who has made one appearance for England – was suspended from playing or training with the Old Trafford club until further notice.

Nike suspended its sponsorship deal with Greenwood, and later terminated it, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its Fifa 22 game.
