AFCON 2021: Austin Eguavoen Finally Reveals The Tactics He Used To Stop Mo Salah In Nigeria’s Emphatic 1-0 Win Over Egypt

Published

on

Nigeria’s coach, Augustine Eguavoen has revealed how his players managed to stop Egypt and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah in their recent emphatic 1-0 win in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The Super Eagles came into the match on Tuesday as underdogs due to the absence of star strikers, Victor Osimhen and Odion Ighalo while Egypt boasted Mo Salah the in-form Liverpool star, but a Kelechi Iheanacho strike ensured Nigeria took all three points.

Egypt hoped Salah would carry his club form to the national team, but he ended up struggling against a sturdy defence line marshalled by Troost Ekong of Watford.

Eguavoen has now explained why it was tough for the Liverpool star to cause problems for Nigeria using his love of Basketball in his analogy.

“In terms of preparation and strategy, we had a special plan for Mohamed Salah because we know his quality,” Eguavoen told BBC Sport Africa.

“Basketball is one game that I love so much. When you are playing against the likes of Allen Iverson, Michael Jordan and others, if you don’t double-team you’ll have a problem.

“That is the same strategy that I bring into football. So when Mo Salah is with the ball, the closest person goes to him and the next person has to double-team to make him play back.

“It worked for us like 80%, but Salah broke loose on one or two occasions which is normal, but again congratulations to the boys because they are so intelligent.”

“Let’s not go too far ahead of ourselves. But I am extremely proud of the boys,” Eguavoen continued.

“There were comments and stuff being said about them before the tournament but they are absolutely professional. When you tell them something it sinks in immediately and that is a good thing we’ve got going well for us.

“They followed instructions, they did exactly what we wanted them to do. When you are tired, someone automatically fills the gap for you. This is the only spirit that can take us very far. Respect the players and they return the treatment.”

The Super Eagles’ next match in Group D will be on Saturday against Sudan who drew 0-0 with Guinea Bissau in their initial fixture.

EPL: Late Rashford Strike Stuns West Ham And Puts Man Utd Fourth

Published

on

Marcus Rashford scored the winner with virtually the last kick of the game as Manchester United leapfrogged West Ham into the Premier League’s top four.

It seemed certain to be another frustrating afternoon for the hosts, who were stifled by the Hammers’ organisation and otherwise came no closer than Fred’s second-half effort that was saved by Alphonse Areola.

But with less than 30 seconds of the three minutes of injury time remaining, United broke and in a move that involved all three substitutes, Edinson Cavani held his run to remain onside as he collected Anthony Martial’s short pass before rolling a cross to the far post, where it was converted by Rashford.

The result was harsh on the Hammers. In a game of few chances, Jarrod Bowen drove a shot into the side-netting before Tomas Soucek’s glancing header bounced just wide of the far post with four minutes remaining.

But Rashford had the final word as United secured back-to-back wins for the first time under Ralf Rangnick.

The result takes United into the top four for the first time in three months, with the Hammers dropping down to fifth, although Tottenham and Arsenal could overtake them if they win their games on Sunday.

Bogoso Explosion: Truck Driver, Motorcyclist And Police Escort Still Alive : Police

The Ghana Police Service has responded to queries about the whereabouts of the driver of the truck that exploded near Bogoso in the Western Region on Thursday.

According to the Director-General of the Police Public Affairs Department, ACP Kwesi Ofori the driver is alive.

In addition to this confirmation, he said the motorcycle rider whose collision with the truck sparked the fire that triggered the blast is also alive, just as the police escort assigned to the truck.

Speaking on Citi FM, ACP Kwesi Ofori said the Tarkwa Divisional Police duly signed and approved a police escort for the truck which was transporting explosives to Chirano Gold Mines.

The police officer has since been interrogated and provided relevant information to the police on what happened.

“The police administration will like to place on record that the vehicle in question was under escort and documents were prepared and given to the escort team to escort the product to its destination. It was properly signed by the Tarkwa Divisional Police and there is no foul play at all…The police officer has been interrogated and has given his opinion on the matter,” ACP Kwesi Ofori explained.

Following the Thursday afternoon incident, many different accounts have been given including claims that the driver and the motorcyclist had died.

Others also claimed that there was no security escort for the transport of the explosives.

But according to ACP Kwesi Ofori, the police escort, motorcyclist and truck driver all survived the deadly incident.

He said the driver, together with the police escort helped to reduce the number of casualties by warning nearby residents including school pupils in a school to move away due to the imminent explosion.

“When the incident took place, the police officer quickly alerted those around the scene that there is a likelihood that there would be an explosion. When the accident occurred, it took about 15 to 20 minutes before the first explosion. The police quickly with the driver tried as much as possible to tell the onlookers to leave the place. Some heeded others didn’t. The first occurred and the second explosion ravaged the town and the village where a lot of destruction took place,” ACP Kwesi Ofori added.

“The driver, the police officer and the motor rider are all alive because they heeded to the advice,” he noted.

Meanwhile, at least 13 people have been confirmed dead with 59 others badly injured.

Over 170 families were directly affected by the incident.

Meanwhile, the Vice President, on behalf of the government visited the Bogoso Catholic Parish Relief Centre where over 300 of the displaced persons are being catered for and donated mattresses, bags of rice as well as GH¢200,000 for the upkeep of survivors.
