Chelsea Legend Didier Drogba Announces Retirement From Professional Football Aged 40

Didier Drogba

Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, ending an illustrious career that lasted 20 years, spanned three decades and saw him become one of the Premier League’s greatest ever imports.

Drogba had most recently been turning out for Phoenix Rising of the USL Championship, a team he also co-owns. His most recent appearance came in the USL Cup playoff final against Louisville City earlier this month, a game Phoenix narrowly lost.

“After 20 years, I have decided to put an end to my playing career,” Drogba told BBC World Service.

“It’s the best way to end, helping some young talent to develop. To give something back to the game was the best way to finish as I have learned so much in the game.”

A relatively late bloomer, Drogba shot to fame during the 2003/04 campaign when his goals fired Marseille to the UEFA Cup final in what was his only season with the club.

The Ivorian had earlier played for Le Mans and Guingamp and went on to join Chelsea in a £24m deal in the summer of 2004. He won back-to-back Premier League titles in his first two seasons in England, adding another in 2009/10.

Drogba also won four FA Cups with Chelsea, scoring the winning goal against Manchester United in the first final to be played at the new Wembley Stadium in 2007, and rounded off his Chelsea career in 2012 by helping the club finally win the Champions League.

Drogba then spent time with Shanghai Shenhua and Galatasaray before returning to Chelsea for one more season and winning the fourth Premier League title of his career in 2014/15. A spell at Montreal Impact followed, and he moved to Phoenix in 2017.

As an international player for Ivory Coast, Drogba scored 65 goals in 104 games for his country. He played in three World Cups and four African Cups in 12 years with Les Elephants.

According to sources, he was convicted for a seven-year term in jail whereby he served a four years sentence for a £1.4bn as he was released in 2015.

Kweku Adoboli also explained to us why he wasn’t able to naturalize to be a citizen of The United Kingdom and more.

Background.
Kweku Adoboli was born in Ghana but left when he was four and has lived in the UK since he was 12.

He is leaving behind his partner Alice, with whom he had been living in Livingston, West Lothian.

Immigration minister Caroline Nokes had said that all foreign nationals sentenced to more than four years’ imprisonment are subject to automatic deportation, unless there are compelling reasons for them to remain.

Adoboli was expected to be put on a charter flight in September, but a judge awarded a last-minute reprieve while his case was reviewed.

Since then, more than 74,000 people have signed a petition against Adoboli’s deportation, with more than 130 members of the UK and Scottish parliaments signing a letter asking Home Secretary Sajid Javid to intervene.

Ms Bardell said Adoboli’s team would now explore further legal means of securing his return, but said doing so could prove difficult from overseas.

Adoboli was found guilty of booking fictitious trades to cover up big losses during the financial crisis between 2008 and 2011.

He pleaded not guilty, saying his senior managers knew what he was doing and encouraged him to take risks.

Neymar To Force PSG Exit As Barcelona Prepare To Welcome Star Forward Back

Published

Neymar

The Catalans want the Brazilian to take the initiative and push for a move back to Camp Nou, while he will also have to mend bridges with fans.

Barcelona have set in motion their ‘Operation Neymar’ to re-sign the Brazilian striker, with Goal understanding he is ready to call time on his career at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Catalans have been in touch with Neymar’s camp to start the process of his comeback to Camp Nou.

Goal’s sources in Catalunya understand Neymar, who moved to PSG in 2017 for a world-record transfer fee of €222 million (£195m/$260m), is unhappy at Parc des Princes and looking for a way out despite just over a year in France laden with goals and trophies.

The star’s team have been in touch with several Barca directors, who have responded with detailed instructions over how a deal that just a few short months ago seemed impossible could become a reality.

First of all, Barca are insistent that, after director Pep Segura’s recent public comments over the possibility of the Brazilian returning, the next step must come from the player himself.

The club board are aware that the manner of Neymar’s exit left a large part of the fanbase disillusioned with his behaviour, that he rushed his departure and did not conduct himself in a manner fitting of the illustrious club.

As a gesture of goodwill, Neymar could make a public statement assuming his rashness in leaving in such a fashion, a move that would calm wary supporters.

A salary cut may also be necessary. Neymar takes home almost €40m with PSG, a figure out of Barca’s reach given their current problems to keep wages under control.

The Blaugrana board sees such a reduction as essential for the deal to prosper, while Goal understands that Neymar would also be willing to negotiate lower terms.

“If the war of lawsuits continues, it will be impossible for Neymar to return,” a director of the Catalan club told Goal in reference to several court wrangles that continue to loom over the player and club in Spain.

The ‘DIS case’, dating back to his first days at Barca after completing his controversial transfer from Santos, is still being heard, while Neymar’s writ over an alleged €26m in unpaid back wages and a counter-suit from Barca over €30m in bonuses from his renewal are also outstanding.

If both sides are serious about his return, they must bury the hatchet and put the lawyers to rest.

PSG too will have to be compensated after receiving comparatively little in return to date for their mammoth investment. Once Neymar meets the conditions set by Barca’s road map detailed above, the club will then turn their attentions to the Ligue 1 giants.

In order to avoid hostilities, either open or brimming under the surface for years to come, Barca believe Neymar must force the issue, making a public recognition that he is not happy at PSG and wants a change of scenery.

Such a move would soften the Parisians’ stance at the negotiating table and permit talks to occur, with the Catalans open to using either Ivan Rakitic or Ousmane Dembele as bargaining chips.

Neymar is well aware of what must be done to seal his return to Camp Nou. He and his camp have been informed of all Barcelona’s requirements, and it is up to him to show that he is serious about joining up once again with Lionel Messi and Co.

If he does not comply, from Barca’s perspective it is very simple: there will be no emotional comeback for their prodigal son.
