Former Barcelona President Sandro Rosell Acquitted Of Money Laundering After Spending Nearly Two Years In Prison

Former Barcelona president, Sandro Rosell, has been acquitted of money laundering charges after spending nearly two years in prison.

Rosell alongside his wife and four others were accused of laundering fees for broadcast rights to Brazil’s matches and a sponsorship contract with Nike.

According to Mail Online Sports News, Court officials in Madrid say there was not enough evidence for a guilty verdict on charges related to the sale of television rights for matches involving the Brazilian national soccer team.

Rosell was in custody for more than 21 months after being accused of misappropriating funds coming from the sale of TV rights and the organization of friendly matches featuring Brazil. There were also questions over a sponsorship contract between Nike and Brazil.

Spanish prosecutors were seeking a six-year prison sentence for Rosell, who was also accused of forming part of a criminal organization, including laundering nearly 20 million euros ($22 million) related to commissions for Brazil matches.

But the 55-year-old always maintained his innocence, and now his allies have slammed the authorities of holding him for so long if he did not commit the crime, saying it’s a miscarriage of justice.

Rosell was the president of FC Barcelona from 2010 to 2014 before stepping down over alleged irregularities stemming from Neymar’s transfer to Barcelona.

Western Togoland: We Don’t Want To Believe That There Are Any Political Groups Behind It : Oppong Nkrumah

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has denied the issue of government sending military men to the Volta Region to intimidate the separatist group, Western Togoland.

Speaking on the issue of the government sending military personnel to intimidate people in the area, Hon Kojo Oppong Nkrumah noted that;

“First of all it is no true that government intends to send soldiers to intimidate people in these areas. Our borders are closed, because of our battle with COVID. We sent troops across the country, there were initial complaints by our political opponents in particular that they were not comfortable with that and they interpreted it as an attack on Voltarians. It was proven to be a flat-out untruth.”

“What had happened on Friday dawn is not the first time we have seen this group go on this claim that there is an old contract that allows them to be independent and seek to express it in one way or the other, and we don’t even want to believe that there are any political groups behind it. We are dealing with it as a purely criminal act, pure infringements on the law of this country and are proceeding to treat the persons who are behind it accordingly,”he added.

The separatist group blocked major roads leading to the Volta Region last week Friday and in the process exchanged gunshots with the police.
