Besiktas Win Turkish Super Lig Title

Canadian forward Cyle Larin drew the penalty that led to the eventual winning goal as Besiktas claim its 16th Turkish Super Lig title on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Goztepe.

Besiktas opened the scoring through Domagoj Vida, but Goztepe equalized shortly thereafter in the 24th minute. Then, midway through the second half, Larin sprinted down the left flank before drawing a penalty that was subsequently converted by Rachid Ghezzal to wrap up the victory and the title.

Larin played a major role in the team’s title run, scoring 19 goals in his breakthrough season. The 26-year-old finished second in the Golden Boot race behind Aaron Boupendza of Hatayspor.

Atiba Hutchinson, the club’s captain and Canadian national team veteran, played the full 90 minutes in the victory. This is the 38-year-old’s third league title with Besiktas and ninth major trophy of his career.

Larin and Hutchinson are the fourth and fifth Canadian men’s players to win a top-flight European league title this season after Scott Arfield (Rangers), Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) and Milan Borjan (Red Star Belgrade) in the Serbian SuperLiga.

Lille’s Jonathan David could become the fourth member of that exclusive list should Les Dogues defeat Saint-Etienne and Paris Saint-Germain drops points against Reims on Sunday.

A driver who knocked down a 27-year-old teacher of De Youngsters School at Adenta with his vehicle and abandoned her to die in a bush at Abokobi has been arrested by the police.

The incident happened at the Adentan-Dodowa traffic intersection at about 7 p.m. on June 7, 2021.

The suspect, Emeka Adams, 42, was arrested nine days after he had allegedly knocked down the teacher with a Hyundai Sonata Saloon vehicle with registration number GB 2126-20.

The unlicensed driver has since been charged with murder.

Confirming the arrest, the Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Mrs Effia Tenge, said after knocking down the teacher, the suspect picked her up under the pretext of taking her to a health facility for treatment.

However, she said police investigations showed that the suspect allegedly abandoned the teacher in a bush at Abokobi, instead of taking her to the hospital.

The body of the victim, she said, was later found in the bush at Abokobi and the police were informed. The police retrieved the body and conveyed it to the Police Hospital Morgue for autopsy and preservation.

Police intelligence, she said, led to the arrest of Adams last Wednesday and the vehicle was also found in his possession.
