Santi Siguero, a Spanish journalist, claims that after signing an extension with PSG, Kylian Mbappe chose to emulate Neymar rather than follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.
The Frenchman ended his transfer saga by turning down a high-profile move to Real Madrid in favor of staying at the Parc des Prices for another three years.
The Ligue 1 champions went above and beyond, offering Mbappe the highest wages in the world and giving him a say in PSG’s decision-making.
According to Marca journalist Siguero, the 23-year-old is following in the footsteps of Neymar rather than Messi or Ronaldo.
He wrote in his Marca column:
“From a sporting point of view, the thing has no merit. He has chosen to be Neymar, the head of a mouse, instead of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, who were the teeth of a lion.”
Ronaldo finished his first spell with Manchester United before moving to Real Madrid at Mbappe’s age, while Messi began his incredible streak of four consecutive Ballon d’Or wins at Barcelona.
While the Frenchman has ridiculous numbers with PSG, the club does not have the same history or European pedigree as the aforementioned Spanish teams.
Ligue 1 isn’t as competitive as La Liga or the Premier League, with the Parisians dominating the French top flight for much of the last decade.
Nonetheless, Neymar joined them for a world-record fee in 2017 at the age of 25, just as he was entering his prime, in a decision that some say has harmed his legacy and career trajectory.
The Brazilian has yet to win the Champions League with PSG, and he has also yet to win the Ballon d’Or, a prize he was widely expected to win after his stellar performances at Barcelona.
Siguero went on to say:
“It is striking that having the decadent Brazilian player so close to him, he has not noticed, for example, Messi, who had a legendary career at Barcelona before taking early retirement at the Parc des Princes. Or Sergio Ramos, a four-time European champion with Real Madrid, who is also enjoying a golden retirement in Paris.”
“His idol, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been declining them for some time now, but after five Champions League trophies and five Ballon d’Ors, maybe he can afford to head there.”
Mbappe marked the occasion by scoring a hat-trick in PSG’s 5-0 win over Metz in their final league match of the season last night.

He finished the season with 39 goals and 26 assists, including 29 in Ligue 1, and won the domestic Golden Boot.
