Agyenim Boateng Adjei, the former head of the Public Procurement Authority, and his brother-in-law, Francis Kwaku Arhin, have both been granted bail in the corruption case by the High Court (Criminal Court 3 Division).

The pair were discovered to be involved in the ‘Contracts for Sale’ scandal in 2020 and were charged with 18 counts of corruption by the Special Prosecutor.

Mr Boateng Adjei, who was charged with 17 counts, pleaded not guilty to all seven counts of profiting from public office and ten counts of directly and indirectly influencing the public procurement process through his office.

Francis Kwaku Arhin, the second accused, also pleaded not guilty to one count of profiting from public office.

The Court thus admitted them to a bail sum of GH¢5 million each with 2 sureties. The sureties are each to deposit their national IDs with the Court’s registry.

Mr. Agyenim Boateng has also been ordered to deposit his passport with the court until the final determination of the case.

Francis Kwaku Arhin, on the other hand, has been allowed to retain his passport on compassionate grounds.

The court has directed the parties to file all documents they would be relying on within four weeks.

The case has been adjourned to June 28, 2022.

Bayern Munich Rejects Cristiano Ronaldo Transfer Propoasl

Published

on

Bayern Munich have reportedly rejected the opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United.

The 37-year-old only returned to Old Trafford last summer and has another year on his contract, with the option to extend that deal until 2024. But after a campaign which saw United record their lowest ever Premier League points tally – the Red Devils are in the midst of an overhaul.

Erik ten Hag is undertaking his first summer in charge and has already seen the likes of Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata depart. The former Ajax boss is expected to implement a system which incorporates a high press, a style that doesn’t come naturally to the veteran forward.

Ten Hag has insisted Ronaldo will be an important part of his project, having scored 24 goals in all competitions despite a difficult season collectively. Ronaldo himself has also stated he is looking forward to working with the new boss, but that has done little to stem the tide of speculation.

Spanish news outlet AS reported this week that Ronaldo is growing increasingly concerned at the club’s direction in the transfer market – having thus far failed to sign a single player. Barcelona ’s Frenkie de Jong remains United’s top target, but other moves appear to be on hold until negotiations with the Blaugrana are confirmed.

That has Ronaldo concerned, with LiverpoolTottenhamManchester City and Arsenal all improving already. Sky Sports in Germany report that the Portuguese’s agent and long-time confidant Jorge Mendes looked to engineer an exit and offered his client to German champions Bayern Munich.

However, there will be no move to the Allianz for Ronaldo, with the club’s director Hasan Salihamidzic speaking out on the speculation. ” Cristiano Ronaldo is a top player with an outstanding career. However, the rumour that is circulating is a rumour that has nothing to do with it.”

It is added that Bayern compiled a list of four reasons for not pursuing a move for Ronaldo, who could have been seen as a replacement for wantaway forward Robert Lewandwoski . The primary reason is said to be their determination to maintain a wage structure considering the goalscoring icon currently pockets around £500,000-per-week from his current employers.

Along with his salary, there was a concern with his age and perhaps most significantly, his ability to play in a high-pressing system, with a focus on players willing to put in the hard yards. Finally, with manager Julian Nageslmann some three years younger than Ronaldo, there were reservations over what his arrival would do to the dressing room dynamics.

Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Wade, Ending Right To Abortion

Published

on

The U.S. Supreme Court has officially overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday, June 24, declaring that Americans no longer have a constitutional right to abortion.

In the court’s most closely watched and controversial case in years, a majority of the justices – all of whom were appointed by Republican presidents – held that the right to end a pregnancy was not found in the text of the Constitution nor the nation’s history.

The court, in a 6-3 vote, upheld a Republican-backed Mississippi law that bans abortion after 15 weeks.

Writing for the court majority, Justice Samuel Alito said: “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start.

“Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.”

The court’s three liberal justices dissented.

In a joint dissenting opinion, Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan heavily criticized the majority, saying: “With sorrow — for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection — we dissent.”

“After today, young women will come of age with fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers had,” Associate Justice Stephen Breyer added in a dissent joined by the court’s two other liberal justices. “The majority accomplishes that result without so much as considering how women have relied on the right to choose or what it means to take that right away.”

Roe v. Wade was centered around ‘Jane Roe’, a pseudonym for Norma McCorvey, a single mother pregnant for the third time, who wanted an abortion. She sued the Dallas attorney general Henry Wade over a Texas law that made it a crime to terminate a pregnancy except in cases of rape or incest, or when the mother’s life was in danger – arguing that the law infringed on her constitutional rights.

The Supreme Court’s ruling came in the pivotal case Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, in which the last abortion clinic in Mississippi opposed the state’s efforts to ban abortion after 15 weeks and overturn Roe in the process.

The ruling means that individual states now have the power to decide on whether to ban abortion.

The Guttmacher Institute, a pro-choice research group, has said that 26 states are “certain or likely” to ban abortion now.

It means the women with unwanted pregnancies in many parts of America will now face the choice of traveling to another state where the procedure remains legal and available, buying abortion pills online or having a potentially dangerous illegal abortion.

Paul Pogba’s Brother Florentin Pogba 31, Joins ATK Mohun Bagan

Published

ATK Mohun Bagan have completed the signing of Florentin Pogba, brother of France World Cup winner, Paul Pogba.

ATK Mohun Bagan are strengthening their defence this season, ahead of a crucial semifinal of the AFC Cup in September. With Spanish defender Tiri injuring himself during the group stage, signing a central defender was priority and Florentin ticked all the boxes.

“ATK Mohun Bagan had a lot of profiles (from player representatives) and Florentin impressed the most. He has more to offer than just a famous surname. He is at the club purely on merit,” said one source who has tracked the development.

Brother of former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, Florentin signed a two-year deal with ATK Mohun Bagan, after parting ways with French Ligue 2 club FC Sochaux-Montbeliard where he still had a year left on his contract.

“Florentin Pogba transferred to @atkmohunbaganfc one year from the end of his contract. FCSM wishes the best to its now former central defender who will turn 32 in a few weeks,” the French club said in a tweet late on Friday.

Caught off-guard by FC Sochaux’s goodbye on social media, ATK Mohun Bagan are now likely to make an official announcement of the transfer in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Born in Guinea, Florentin was brought up in France and kickstarted his professional career with CS Sedan in Ligue 2 in 2010.

After making 45 appearances over two seasons for the club, he moved to AS Saint-Etienne in 2012, before making his Ligue 1 debut the next year.

With Saint-Etienne, he had a long spell and played regularly in the Europa League where he was up against his famous brother Paul Pogba, then with Manchester United.

Florentin made his international debut for Guinea against Mali as a 19-year-old in 2010.

His twin brother Mathias is also a footballer and last donned colours for ASM Belfort.

Interestingly, Mathias shared the dressing room with Ishan Pandita during their time at Lorca in 2020, before the young India striker returned home to join FC Goa.
