The Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) on Wednesday October 2, announced that Genevieve Nnaji’s ‘Lionheart’ will be the country’s submission in the International Feature Film category of the 2020 editiion of Oscar Awards.
The 12-man NOSC team which has some notable Nollywood stakeholders of international standing as its members, picked ‘Lionheart’ for its considerable shots at the rules. Prior to the selection, there was a statutory vetting and subsequent voting of entries received from Nigerian filmmakers at home and in the Diaspora.
Commenting on the entries received this year, NOSC Chairman Chineze Anyaene said a significant improvement was witnessed this year.
“While we cannot say that what we have are the best that Nigeria is capable of producing, it is heart-lifting to know that, from the strength of the entries received this year, we are truly ready for the Oscars. Filmmakers are gradually taking the Oscar rules into consideration, and I have no doubt that it is going to be more competitive, going forward,” he said.
Ahead of every Oscars, it is expected that every country outside the United States submits one film as long as it’s not primarily in English.
Kanye West Donates $2million, Sets Up College Fund For George Floyd’s Six-Year-Old Daughter
Kanye West has donated $2 million to support the grieving families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbrery, and Breonna Taylor following their deaths.
The 42-year-old billionaire rapper, who has stayed silent on social media amid the ongoing protests over George Floyd’s death also set up a college fund to cover the tuition for Floyd’s six-year-old daughter, Gianna Floyd.
A representative confirmed Kanye West’s enormous contribution to CNN, adding that Kanye also offered to cover the legal fees for the families of Arbery and Taylor, and promised to financially support Black-owned businesses in his hometown of Chicago.
The donations come after critics on Twitter questioned the rapper for remaining silent over the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of George Floyd’s killing and the deaths of other African-Americans.
Kanye West Tops Forbes’ List of Highest-Paid Musicians
Kanye West is not only the highest-paid musician of 2020 — he’s the second-highest-paid celebrity overall, according to Forbes annual list, which dropped on Thursday.
While far behind extended-family member Kylie Jenner, who topped the main list with $590 million, West is No. 2 with $170 million, far ahead of the next musician on the list, Elton John, who came in at No. 13 overall (No. 2 in music) with earnings of $81 million. The third highest-paid musician is Ariana Grande, who is the highest-placing female musician at No. 17, with $72 million; next are the Jonas Brothers with $68.5 million; and fifth is the Chainsmokers with $68 million.
The list lands at an unprecedented time in the world and the music industry: A large percentage of the artists on the list made a large percentage of their income from touring, which most certainly will not be the case this year, with all major tours postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the bulk of West’s income derives from his massively popular Yeezy sneaker line, and from Jay-Z and Drake to Rihanna and Taylor Swift, he’s not the only one diversifying his revenue streams.
