Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool could still be at the mercy of Barcelona and Real Madrid for some of their leading stars in the transfer market.
Anfield has become a prime destination for players on the strength of their recent successes, with the Reds the current European and world champions and runaway leaders in the Premier League.
However, Klopp accepts the lure of the traditional Spanish heavyweights will forever prove strong, particularly to Liverpool’s South American contingent.
“I think for some players, if Barcelona or Real call, it’s still hard to say ‘no’,” said the Reds boss
“I think for the whole world, Liverpool are one of the top, top, top, top clubs.
“But in the South American part of the world, the other two are a bit more famous which makes sense language and culture-wise.
“It’s why calls from them could always cause some trouble, but apart from that, there’s not 500 clubs who could buy players from us.”
Liverpool can once again move 22 points clear at the Premier League summit with victory at home to struggling West Ham United on Monday evening.
Klopp, though, has played down expectations of bringing a constant stream of silverware to Anfield.
“It will be difficult, nobody knows exactly what will happen,” he said. “A positive run helps, a negative run disturbs. Things like that.
“Injuries, wrong decisions, we could have had this season. For example, one centre-half less and we wouldn’t be here (19 points clear). Full-backs early in the season out injured, we wouldn’t be here.
“We are not worried about the future, and that’s probably the most positive thing you can say about it. But we still don’t know about it.
“The plan was always to create a basis where we are in and around the Champions League spots but nowadays you cannot create a team that will be constantly first for the next 10 years.
“There are periods – and I don’t mean turnaround where the team in first finishes 20th and 20 goes to 1 – but there are six or seven clubs where things can change around.
“We have to make sure we are always close, and the closer we are, the easier it is to be first.”
