John Mahama To Face Jail Term Over False Passport Issue

Published

on

Ex-president John Mahama’s name has crept into the case of a passport application that had some false information.

According to a statement issued by the special prosecutor, Martin Amidu, the false information was found on the form of Samuel Mahama.

The former President may face up to a 2-year jail term for guaranteeing a passport application that had some forged information on it.

According to a report from the office of the Special prosecutor, there was a breach of the Passport and Travel Certificate Decree, 1967, NLCD 155 when the ex-president served as a guarantor for his brother Samuel Adam Mahama’s passport application with incorrect information on it.

Further revelation from the report has it that John Dramani Mahama together with his elder brother Alfred Abdulai Mahama were the guarantors for Samuel Mahama’s passport.

Apparently, Samuel Adam Mahama indicated on the form that he enrolled at the University of Ghana from January 6, 1992, to November 4, 1994.

This information was proven false but John Mahama went on to guarantee the application for his brother.

Martin Amidu’s statement added that John Mahama and his elder brother Alfred were in the known that their brother Samuel did not attend the University of Ghana but went ahead to guarantee the application.

A lawyer, Faisal Ibrahim weighing in on the issue wrote, ”Section 15 (1) (b) states that a person who makes a statement which is, to the knowledge of that person untrue for the purpose of procuring a passport or a travel certificate for that or any other person commits an offence.”

As punishment for this offence, defaulters could face 2 years imprisonment, a fine or both.

The Electoral Commission(EC), led by its chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensah, announced that they would be announcing the winner 24 hours after the election comes to an end.

Mrs. Jean Mensah made this statement while interacting with some members of the Council of State on the commission’s steps in the build-up towards the elections, which is just a few weeks away.

According to her, the commission has put in place things that would help them declare the winner of the elections 24 hours later after voting comes to an end on December 7.

“We are promoting some efficiency into the system. We have worked with our numbers and we have a duration within which the results should be transmitted.

“We are expecting that by the next day, we should be able to declare the results. We do not intend to go beyond 24 hours. And we are confident that God being our helper, because of the efficiency we have introduced into the processes, we should be able to declare results within 24 hours.”

“At the polling station level, we have given the polling centres an hour and a half to be able to send the results to the collation centre.

“At the constituency collation centres as well, we have provided them with three hours within which they will collate the results accurately and send the results to the regions. We are confident that we should have all the results before midnight and we are confident that come December 8 we should be able to declare the results.”; she added.

The EC has approved 12 presidential candidates to contest in the upcoming election.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is a Government agency that is responsible for the management of disasters, responding to emergency situations, and educating the general public on how to live harmoniously and be cautious about disasters.

The board operates under the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Ghana. As a matter of fact, NADMO is one of the critical agencies responsible for peace and a safe environment.

It is barely a fortnight for Ghanaians to elect Parliamentarians and the president to govern the nation in the next four years.

According to NADMO Act 2016 (Act 927) which has given them a rounded paradigm shift to be more proactive than being reactive on disaster management, the Director-General, Hon. Nana Agyemang Prempeh and the board have put up some befitting measures ahead of the December 7th Elections.

A facilitator, Mr. Bright Elorm Doviavu who spoke on behalf of the Director-General, indicated that NADMO and its stakeholders are fully preparing in managing any possible humanitarian cataclysm which may emanate from any polling station as the police service has declared some centers as critical hot spots.

Mr. Bright Elorm Doviavu added that, the Director-General, Hon. Nana Agyemang Prempeh is appealing to every tom, dick, and harry to preach peace and assist to ensure as flat as a pancake implementation of laid down protocols which are imperative to maintain peace as the president of the Republic of Ghana, H. UK Scientist Invents Face Mask That ‘Kills COVID-19 And Other Viruses’

Published

on

A Nottingham Trent University scientist, Garreth Cave has invented a face mask that can ”kill viruses including COVID-19 and influenza upon contact.”

Mirror reported that while most face masks feature a three-layer design, this mask features five layers, including an antiviral layer made of nano-copper. It also has ions that are emitted once in contact with a virus, causing the virus to die and stop reproducing.

Dr Gareth Cave, who designed the mask said;

“The mask we’ve developed has been proven to inactivate viruses upon contact; the antiviral layer kills virus which has been blocked by the filter layers.

“The challenge with conventional surgical-type masks is that they only block virus from entering or exiting the mask. They don’t have an active mechanism for killing it once it’s trapped in the mask.

“Our new antiviral mask has been designed to utilise the existing barrier technology and combine it with our nanotechnology to kill the virus once it is trapped there.

“We’ve added the barrier layer to both sides of the mask so not only does it protect the wearer but also those around. By killing the virus on contact, it also means that the used face mask can be safely disposed of and not be a potential source of passive transfer.”

During tests, the face mask was shown to be able to kill more than 90% of Coronavirus and influenza viruses over seven hours, and had a filtration efficiency of 99.98%.

The masks are expected to go into production this month, and will be commercially available from December for healthcare, transport and food service settings.

Cave added; “It’s exciting to see our technology move forward and make a real impact towards the fight against the spread of COVID-19.”
