Nigeria: College Student Beaten To Death For ‘Blaspheming’ Against Islam

Deborah, female student at Nigeria’s Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), was allegedly tortured and beaten to death for blaspheming Islam.

Deborah, who is said to live in Sokoto’s Old Airport Road neighborhood with her parents, was accused of insulting Prophet Muhammad (SAW) during a heated debate with her classmates.

“She was arguing with some of her classmates about their upcoming exam, and when asked how she passed her exams, she said it was because of Jesus.” She was asked to retract her statement and apologize, but she refused.

School security arrived and took her to their post, but they were overpowered by students, and she was killed as a result. According to the source, her body was burned on the school grounds after she was murdered.

One of the men who beat and set fire to the young lady boasted about his actions in a viral video.

The Commissioner of Information, Isah Bajini Galadanchi, told reporters at Government House in Sokoto that the state government has ordered security agencies to investigate the incident to determine its root causes. It also ordered the college’s immediate closure.

“The Sokoto State Government has been made aware of the unfortunate incident that occurred at the Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE) Sokoto, in which a student of the college lost her life.”

The College has been ordered to close immediately by the government.

Rt Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the State Governor, has already directed the Ministry of Higher Education and relevant security agencies in the State to begin investigations into the remote and immediate causes of the incident and report back to the Government.

Meanwhile, Governor Ammu Waziri Tambuwal has urged the people of the state to remain calm and peaceful, stating that “the government will take appropriate actions based on the findings of the relevant authority’s investigations,” Galadanchi said.
