Shatta Wale, Sarkodie and 5 Other Musicians Who Sold Out to Become Successful

I am not writing to the conventional street sell out connotation so lets cover the basis of my connotation: Selling out takes diverse forms- forgoing standards, authenticity, truth, reality, predisposed beliefs, values etc for ads and commercialization of your music OR for benefits for and from your brands.

Lets go through these 7 artistes who sold out and became successful.

Like Kurt Cobain said, its not really hard to keep your dignity and sign a major deal, but then again most people don’t have any dignity at all. That was the case, given the preconceived idea that the duo were a Muslim. It took $200,000 from Star Beer in 2013 to sweep them off their feet to commit their music to the promotion of the alcoholic beverage despite earlier claims of being Muslims. Regardless of this major sell out on their beliefs and values, they have maintained and even gained more success music-wise.

Her private part was pictured by NewsOne team at the 2011 December To Remember concert. This marked the glorious entrance of home-Christened songstress, Raquel into the Ghanaian music scene. She swore it was a wardrobe malfunction but then again her success in the music came live after her arguable sell out.

Remember when the BET nominee publicly admitted to dumbing down for commercial purpose? Well, he was internationally recognised for his hiphop but locally, he was slacking. He decided to sell out on quality so as to make it in the industry. That’s about reeling off musical quality just for a few bucks in commercial value. The hiphop star ended up doing Azonto and coming up with relatively ‘dumb’ lines. He, however, achieved immense success in the Ghanaian industry after his sell out. In case he thought he needed to sell out to make it, he should note that rapper E.L just won the artiste of the year and he did not have to dumb down to win it.

The 16 years crooner is an epitome of female sell out in Ghana. Her proclivity to be in scanty dresses coupled with sexually inappropriate lyrics opened the era of female artistes selling sex and music concurrently.

The hiplife legend had his legend status certified already but still chose to sell out in what seemed like a nebulous attack on fellow legends, Okyeame Kwame and Obour, just so he could reignite his career. Merits of the accusations of rape and counter sell out claims were unfounded as he was heavily censured by major players in the Ghanaian music industry. Regardless, it paid off with the masses as the song even earned him an award ( 2010 GMA’s best collab).

Guru, known for his staunch hiphop works sold out to azonto and has since not turned back. I am not sure he does not even knows what hiphop even sounds anymore. They say hindsight is always better foresight, here we are, having Guru as the artiste with the most consistent hit songs since 2011. Who would have thought selling out on a genre would pay this much? He is still ranting about being ignored at the VGMAs though.

His first song on his first album, the Rapperholic had him lauding Konvict Music as though he was signed to the label. He further confirmed the deal with Konvict on his 2010 BRA BE HWE single with Guru. Recently, he rescinded the claim and admitted he was never signed to the label, such a naivety. The sell out led to his massive entrance into the African music , which projected him to win his BET award. His other sell out was the recent Ace Hood saga which got him into dire trouble.

Shatta Wale

The bad boy of Ghana music has repeatedly had double standards dealing with artistes. He has gone from changing genres, names, dissing almost every competitor and apologising later on. His biggest sell out was the night of 2012 GMA when he furiously dissed everyone from Khaki to Chatter House—joining in on the sell out idea that if you need an award, diss Charter House. A couple of months on and he was being a sycophant by releasing tracks to apologize to Chatter House and its CEO just for an award. Well, it worked but was it really worth it? His recent break up with long time ‘lover’, Bulldog of BULLHAUSE, is seen as one of his chicaneries to stay on top, commercial-wise. In fact, at one instance he was touting Bulldog as the best he ever had and now he says Bulldog has just following him around, no work done.

In all, its pointless to be worried about an artiste selling out, the idea of a sell out, like Kevin Barnes puts it , exists in the dictionary of the over-privileged. Struggles in the industry place most of these artistes in such positions.

Mona Gucci Slams Emelia Brobbey

Mona Gucci, a Ghanaian actress, TV show host, and self-made lawyer, has unprovokedly attacked Kumawood actress-cum-singer Emelia Brobbey.

Mona Gucci can be clearly heard warming a friend not to use Emelia Brobbey’s songs as the background of her Snapchat posts in a fast trending audio that has gone rife on the local digital space.

According to Mona Gucci, Emelia Brobbey is untalented and her songs are meaningless, so she becomes irritated whenever she hears them.

She went on to say that she would be very disappointed in her friend if she saw anything about Emelia Brobbey on her posts again.

Many social media users who have seen Mona Gucci’s disturbing rants about innocent Emelia Brobbey have expressed their displeasure with the Onua TV employee.

According to these sources, Mona Gucci simply despises Emelia for no apparent reason and is only jealous of her success.

Emelia Brobbey is not a particularly talented musician, but personally attacking her is unacceptable.
