The wait is finally over. After teasing more than three months ago that her new song “Carolina” would be coming “soon,” Taylor Swift has at last dropped the full original song she penned for the Where the Crawdads Sing film soundtrack.
Before its release first thing Friday (June 24), “Carolina” has been slowly making its way to viewers in bits and pieces sprinkled across various trailers for the Daisy Edgar Jones-led film. Swift’s nature-driven lyrics are emblematic of Jones’ character Kya, who learns to live by herself in the North Carolina marshlands after being abandoned by her parents and is later accused of murdering a young man she was romantically involved with.
“Into the mist, into the clouds,” the 32-year-old pop star sings in “Carolina,” her breathy lower register floating over a sprawling web of acoustic instruments. “I’ll make a fist, I’ll make it count.”
“There are places I will never, ever go,” she later sings. “Things that only Carolina knows.”
“About a year & half ago I wrote a song about the story of a girl who always lived on the outside, looking in. Figuratively & literally,” Swift tweeted when the song arrived. “The juxtaposition of her loneliness & independence. Her curiosity & fear all tangled up. Her persisting gentleness & the world’s betrayal of it.”
Swift first announced her musical contribution to the film in a March Instagram post explaining that she’d penned “Carolina” after reading Where the Crawdads Sing, the debut novel written by Delia Owens, which inspired the film. “Where the Crawdads Sing is a book I got absolutely lost in when I read it years ago,” the pop star wrote. “As soon as I heard there was a film in the works starring the incredible @daisyedgarjones and produced by the brilliant @reesewitherspoon, I knew I wanted to be a part of it from the musical side.”
“I wrote the song ‘Carolina’ alone and asked my friend @aarondessner to produce it,” she continued. “I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story.”

Just in time for BET Awards weekend, Lil Nas X returns with his new single “Late to Da Party” featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again.
The track opens with Nas chanting, “F**k BET!” after he was shut out of the nominations for the second year in a row. He called out the network in a series of since-deleted tweets.
“Thank you BET Awards. An outstanding zero nominations again,” he tweeted before explaining his source of anger. “I just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are invisible.”
BET is not the only one Nas puts on notice. “Don’t try me ’cause bitch, I can’t be late to the party,” he raps before YoungBoy turns up on his verse.
This is the first music from Nas since his debut album Montero in September. He is working on the follow-up and previously teased a collaboration with Saucy Santana titled “Down Souf Hoes.”
You can catch Nas performing “Late to Da Party” on his upcoming “Long Live Montero Tour,” which kicks off Sept. 6 in Detroit.
After being cleared on gun charges, the Compton rapper gets back to the music with his new EP The Big 3.
The project, his first since his sophomore album Live Life Fast in December, features a trio of tracks including “Real Talk,” “Tootsies,” and “No Mop,” produced by London On Da Track.
Earlier this month, Roddy was arrested on gun charges prior to his performance at the Governors Ball. He was released from custody the next day and all charges against him were dropped.
“I feel like it was just a misunderstanding,” he told L.A. Leakers when asked about the incident. “What the police have to understand is let’s have conversations and let’s not throw out stereotypes and different things. It just don’t make sense. At the end of the day, I’m not going to risk myself, $400,000, $500,000 in the hole for trying to act hard… I just feel like it was a miscommunication and they wasn’t trying to hear it too much.”
Roddy will join his “Cooped Up” collaborator Post Malone on his “Twelve Carat Tour,” which kicks off Sept. 10 in Omaha.
