Things Don’t Look Great For Kanye West’s Friendship With John Legend

Kanye West has been ruffling a lot of feathers lately. That’s not necessarily news. He’s always been controversial — it’s kind of his thing. Now that he’s gotten political, he seems to be alienating more of his old friends.
John Legend and his wife, Chrissy Teigen, recently opened up to Vanity Fair for the December 2019 issue. In their interview, they talked about how West’s open and vocal support of President Donald Trump may end their friendship.
Kanye West published John Legend’s texts
In 2018, West tweeted in support of President Trump. Legend publically called out his rapper friend.
“I hope you’ll reconsider aligning yourself with Trump,” Legend wrote at the time. “You’re way too powerful and influential to endorse who he is and what he stands for. As you know, what you say really means something to your fans … so many people who love you feel so betrayed right now because they know the harm that Trump’s policies cause. Don’t let this be part of your legacy.”
Legend also reached out to the rapper privately through text message and West posted pictures on social media of texts Legend sent him. In those texts, Legend asks the rapper to reconsider his support of President Trump.
West has been very vocal about his love for the president and former reality TV star. They have interacted on social media, and West called on Trump to intervene when his friend and fellow rapper, A$AP Rocky, was arrested abroad.
Although Trump may not have been able to influence the situation with Rocky as much as West may have hoped, it doesn’t seem to have deterred his support for the politician.
John Legend thinks Kanye West is not supporting the president for the right reasons
One of my favorite of many things about what the Trump hat represents to me is that people can’t tell me what to do because I’m black

While Legend admits that he and West were never exactly best buddies, they have collaborated in the past. Legend also credits West for kickstarting his career.
Legend knows West pretty well, and based on what he knows of him he doesn’t think that West is really supporting the president for political reasons. Instead of throwing his support behind the president because of his policies or actions while in office Legend thinks that West sees the president as a controversial figure, and supports him to create more controversy.
Legend says: “I think what was always challenging about it was Kanye has never been political. I don’t think he knows one way or another what policies of Trump’s he likes. He just kind of embraced Trump’s blow-it-all-up spirit and the energy of himself being countercultural in supporting him.”
Kanye West’s wife Kim Kardashian has been to the White House
Kardashian visited President Trump to discuss criminal justice reform. She faced some backlash from fans, although many support her because she went for a worthy cause. She doesn’t necessarily share her husband’s political views either.
Kardashian went talk to President Trump to discuss criminal justice reform. Although the reality star was advocating for the release of one particular prisoner during the visit, she’s taken up the cause of prison and justice reform, and she seems very serious about it: Kardashian is going to go back to school to get a law degree, and for her birthday West donated $1 million in his wife’s name to charities that advocate for prisoners.
Kardashian’s visit was controversial. Some people thought that her advocating for one specific prisoner was unfair to the huge number of people in prison for nonviolent drug offenses. Her visit did bring awareness to the cause, and the president was on board.
All in all, the visit was a success, for Kardashian herself and for her cause. But according to Legend, it might not have been thanks to Kim’s hard work.
Legend says it’s “a cheap win” for the Trump administration. He thinks that because of the publicity that naturally follows Kardashian, he can make his administration look good without a lot of time or effort by doing what she asks.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen announced who they’re supporting for 2020
Legend is definitely going to be voting in the Democratic primary to choose Trump’s 2020 challenger. He’s supporting Elizabeth Warren. He says “she’s the best candidate running today and she comes at it with joy and with sincerity and with a wealth of knowledge and experience.”As for Teigen, she seems undecided. She says she likes Warren, but she’s also a fan of Kamala Harris.
Hopefully, political differences don’t divide Teigen and Legend. It seems that the ship has sailed for his friendship with Kanye.
